The Problems of a Self Cleaning Litter Box

Many cat owners would jump at any chance that makes it easier to take care of their cats.  Thoughtful businesses try to use this opportunity to design a product that generates profits instead of results.  This is the primary reason why pet owners should use discretion when purchasing an automatic litter box.

Automatic litter boxes, while an interesting concept, usually do not fulfill all of the promises that are described on the package.  In fact, many of these litter boxes fall far short of expectations if the variables are not exactly perfect.  On that topic, let’s take a look at some of the disadvantages to having an automatic litter box.

Every automatic litter box has to use a scoopable cat litter.  If the correct cat litter is not utilized, the cleaning process of the litter box will be ineffective.  Clumping cat litter is more expensive then standard cat litter.  In addition to this, many scoopable cat litter products will create a lot of dust that may include sodium bentonite.  This is unhealthy for any pet or human to breathe and is the main compound that makes cat litter clump.

Nearly all self cleaning cat litter boxes require that they be positioned close to an electrical outlet so that the electric cord may be plugged in and the cleaning cycle powered.  This may be an inconvenience in itself, but what happens if the electricity goes out?  Fortunately nearly all automatic litter boxes have a battery backup feature.  However, the cleaning process tends to be less effective and larger clumps may be hard to dispose of.

A large number of the automatic litter boxes available include a rake system to dispose of the clumped litter.  While in concept this is good, real world examples have proven that the raking system is less then desirable and may cause a significant mess when a cat has loose stool.  In many cases, just getting the rake out to clean can be a chore.  And if the rake is not properly cleaned immediately, the mess will become worse and harder to clean.

Prior to shopping for a new litter box, first determine if a self cleaning litter box is right for you and your cat.  In some situations, cat owners will find out that an automatic litter box just is not good to use.  Granted, scooping a litter box manually is not enjoyable, but fussing with a dirty litter box to remove the rake is more difficult and has forced many cat owners to dispose of their pricey litter box for a standard box.

The leading consideration in purchasing a litter box should always include matching the size of the litter box to the cat.  A cat must be able to easily get in and out of the litter box.  Any box that requires leaping is just too big for the cat.  If the litter box is too short for the cat, pet owners will quickly find out when the cat litter does not stay in the box.

As cat owners, we really want the best for our family pets.  A clean and functional litter box helps them to stay happy and healthy.  But before thinking about the convenience of a self cleaning litter box, first consider how these litter boxes will function in the real world.  Most cat owners have found that a more expensive product does not always provide a more functional litter box.
